Santa Monica Art in Public Places

Artist: Judithe Hernandez

Location: 4th street/Colorado platform

24 individual scenes made from glass mosaic tiles that depict colorful scenes. Hernandez was inspired by myth and created works that are inspiring and fun to ponder. With so much to see, it’s worth the $1.75 train fare just to view the entire collection up close.

Location: Triangle Square near Colorado/3rd.

Three bright cone viewers offer spectacular stencil images of -holographs that include one of the 3rd Street Promenade in the late 1800’s.

Location: 1855 Main Street, 90401

Intertwined chains that rise up into a nuclear cloud, this work is a comment as well as a powerful sculpture. It was mean to be a symbol or warning to disarm. There is an inscription reading “This is a statement of peace. May it never become an epitaph.”

335 mirror polished stainless steel spheres defy gravity as they are suspended on the east side of parking structure #7. The shape they form is said to suggest sea life, but the individual steel globes hang on individual cables to mimic a Newton’s Cradle.

between The Pier and Pico Blvd.

When the wind blows over these large scale beach chairs, they produce notes as if you were a giant and these were your pan pipes. They are also used as a nice places to sit and watch the sun go down.

One part self-portrait, and one part poetry, this mural is an ode to the beauty of the artist’s heritage. Farsi calligraphy makes up the hair and the turquoise  color, also used in the tile background, is reflective of the tiles used in the mosques of Isfahan.
